The Dunlop Crybaby may be the best-known Wah pedal in popular culture, but Vox has often been credited with inventing the Wah pedal in the 60s, so clearly it’s something they know a bit about. With the Vox V847, they’ve taken that experience and supplemented it with more modern technology to produce their newest effort. The result is a competitively priced pedal targeting newbies looking to incorporate a Wah effect into their sound.

In keeping with tradition, Vox has kept the design of the V847 simple. It comes in the classic, but sturdy rocker type casing with a pedal that feels nice underfoot. When it comes to sound, you sense almost immediately that the V847 is purpose-made for clean settings. The range was expansive, yet the highs were nice, full and noise-free. Mind you, the wide frequency range here means that the pedal takes a bit of getting used to – you’ll need to put in a bit of practice to avoid too many extreme highs and lows that can make your playing sound too generic. That said, the wide frequency range has its advantages too: try playing staccato reggae-style chords while depressing and releasing the pedal fully for the duration of each chord and you get a very authentic Caribbean feel.

In conclusion, the V847 is a good entry-level pedal with a clean, bright tone and plenty of range. It doesn’t like distortion, so metalheads and rocker should look elsewhere. Nevertheless, it comes with a very attractive price tag and should appeal to new players.
