Summary

Pros: Performs equally well on clean and distorted settings.
Cons: Not convinced of the usability of the ‘Whacked’ setting.
Overall: A nice upgrade from the standard Fulltone Clyde Wah with a lot of extra tonal capabilities.

Full Review

Fulltone is well known for quality pedals and stompboxes. Their Wah pedals, in particular, possess great tone and a wider range of sweep than others, including Dunlop’s ubiquitous Crybaby. There are two versions of the Fulltone Clyde Wah pedal. As the name implies, this is the deluxe model. What makes this different from its counterpart is the added flexibility of an input boost and a selector switch for 3 separate Wah settings aptly named ‘Shaft’, ‘Jimi’ and ‘Whacked’.

Although the input boost was handy for added gain, it was these Wah settings that interested us most. We found that, with perhaps the exception of the ‘Whacked’ setting (although this could have a potentially interesting application with a bass), they were very usable. In particular, the ‘Shaft’ worked well with clean settings and ‘Jimi’ sounded great on distorted settings. So, essentially, here you have a Wah pedal specifically designed for musicians who need to use Wah on both clean and high gain channels, which, theoretically, could be very handy in a cover band scenario.

Overall, tone was excellent across the board; pronounced, smooth and natural sounding. The Fulltone Clyde Deluxe turned out to be a great little all-rounder, well built and certainly worth the extra cash for the additional features missing on the standard model.
